Volvo Reliability

Volvo’s reputation for progressive engineering and commitment to car safety reflects well on the Swedish brand. But how reliable are Volvos? Generally speaking, the answer is reasonably reliable. Volvos usually perform acceptably well in reliability surveys, without particularly excelling.

But our own recent survey, which analysed 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period, actually indicated a dip below the usual middle of the road ranking.  Volvo placed 25th out of 33 manufacturers with a reliability score of 3.9. On a more positive note, Volvo did pretty well in this year’s Driver Power survey, ranking 13th, which suggest owners are generally happy with their Volvos, even if reliability isn’t great.

How reliable are Volvo’s top models?

XC60

Volvo’s compact SUV has been commended for its solid build quality and refinement but doesn’t fare particularly well in the Reliability Index, scoring 112.00, which is a bit below average. Problems have been noted with fuel leaks, software malfunctions and electronics, though What Car suggests that serious issues tend not to appear before 100,000 miles.

C30

The compact C30 is Volvo’s best performing model in the Reliability Index, ranking 73 in a field of 250 cars with a creditable score of 61.00, significantly better than average. This atypically small Volvo hatchback has never been a big seller but appears to be a solid second hand choice if you value reliability and build quality.
