Skoda Reliability

Once synonymous with cheap, low-quality engineering, Skoda’s reputation is so thoroughly transformed that it’s now widely recognises as a brand you can trust to produce smartly designed, dependable cars. How has the Czech manufacturer achieved such an impressive reputational makeover? Largely thanks to Volkswagen, which purchased the company in 2000.

Skoda has thrived as a VW subsidiary and tends to do pretty well in most reliability surveys.

Our own study, which analysed 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period, placed Skoda in 6th place out of 33 manufacturers, a very creditable performance. What Car’s 2019 reliability rankings saw the Czech manufacturer finish in 7th place. While it rarely troubles the dominance of Japanese brands like Honda and Toyota, Skoda tends to perform better than most of its European rivals.

How reliable are Skoda’s top models?

Fabia

Skoda’s popular small car has usually performed pretty well in reliability surveys and owner feedback is typically very favourable – it seems the Fabia is a pleasure to own. The Reliability Index currently ranks it 49th in a field of 250 cars, although an average repair cost of £280.66 could be lower.

Octavia

This smart family hatchback has earned a longstanding reputation for its solid build quality and general dependability. Recent reliability results are a bit more patchy, however. Its current Reliability Index score is 95.00 – just above average but a long way short of its most reliable competitors.
