Mini Reliability

Mini is more famous for its iconic looks and association with best of British design than the quality of its engineering. If ever a car could get away with shoddy build quality and questionable mechanical performance, it’s surely the lovable Mini. But Britain’s favourite little car actually has a pretty creditable track record when it comes to reliability, in recent years at least.

While Mini doesn’t trouble the top of the reliability table, its midtable performance means prospective owners shouldn’t be overly concerned. Our recent reliability study places Mini 14th out of 33 manufacturers with a solid score of 4.1 out of 5. It fares less well in the frequency of failure table, however. The overall impression is that Minis are somewhat prone to mechanical failure but that repair costs are relatively low.

How reliable are Mini’s top models?

Mini Cooper

Generally speaking, the ever-popular Mini Cooper ranks about average, if not slightly below average, in most reliability surveys. Owners mostly have positive things to say about life with a Mini Cooper but it’s clear that there’s room for improvement when it comes to reliability. Though Mini repairs are generally cheap the relatively high likelihood of mechanical failure means it’s wise to have a good warranty in place.

Mini One

The Mini One’s warranty survey results are very similar to the Mini Cooper’s, in a word -average. The repair costs are on average marginally more expensive. The most frequently reported failures relate to the engine – 33.02% according to the Reliability Index.
