Mercedes Reliability

Mercedes standing owes much to its reputation for quality German engineering and exacting build quality, but this isn’t always borne out by its performance in reliability surveys. Indeed, our own study, which analysed 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period, ranked Mercedes 18th out of 33 car manufacturers. Not an necessarily a disastrously bad result but arguably lower than you’d expect from such an esteemed brand.

Our findings are far from isolated, What Car’s recent 2019 reliability survey placed Mercedes 6th in its table of the LEAST reliable car manufacturers. Considering the cost and prestige of the brand it’s surprising how prone Mercedes’ are to issues.

How reliable are Mercedes’ top models?

C-Class

The C-Class is an important model for Mercedes (one in five Mercedes sales are C-Classes) and it’s said that the manufacturer put a lot of effort into ensuring the third generation (2007- of the model went some way towards rebuilding the brand’s reputation for top-tier build quality. The bad news is that the new generation has had a bit of a stinker in the latest Drive Power survey, ranking 188th of 200 cars based on owner feedback.

E-Class

The E-Class is a similar story to the C-Class. The previous generation has generally fared pretty well in reliability surveys, achieving a better than average Reliability Index score and garnering positive owner feedback. However, the current generation’s early survey feedback is less glowing, with electrical faults emerging as a common issue.
