Renault Reliability

Historically, Renault’s reputation for reliability has been patchy but these days it usually does pretty well. It ranked 8th (in a field of 33 manufacturers) in our recent reliability study, scoring an impressive 4.2 out of 5.

The MotorEasy survey, which analysed 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period, found that Renaults had a relatively high rate of mechanical failure, but this was balanced out by inexpensive repair costs.

Overall, Renaults seem to offer a good ownership experience. Other recent surveys have tended to place the French manufacturer well clear of the least reliable manufacturers but a little short of the top brands. The consensus seems to be that Renault’s are pretty well-built, but there’s probably room for improvement.

How reliable are Renault’s top models?

Clio

Renault’s evergreen Clio, the original supermini, has performed pretty well in recent reliability surveys. What Car placed it 9th in the small and city cars category of its reliability survey and its Reliability Index score indicates that it’s well above average in the reliability stakes. The average repair cost of £254.13 is also pretty low. Electrical faults are far from uncommon however - central locking, alarm, ignition system and lighting issues are widely reported.

Megane

Like the Clio, the Megane has been around for ages, so Renault clearly has plenty of faith in this trusty small family car. If anything, the Megane’s reliability seems to have improved in recent years. Its Reliability Index score is now 62 (much better than average) and the average repair cost is just £260.16. There are issues – premature clutch wear is wodely reported – but overall the picture is pretty good.
