This impression is certainly consistent with our recent reliability survey, which ranked SMART as the third most reliable car brand (out of 33) based on an analysis of 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period. It’s a great result for an often-underestimated manufacturer that similar surveys haven’t even included.

How reliable are SMART’s top models?
ForTwo
SMART’s most popular model generally fares very well in reliability surveys. The Reliability Index currently ranks it as the 56th most reliable car on the market with an impressive score of 52.00, which rates it well above average. The average repair cost is £261.89, which is reasonably competitive but a bit higher than some other city cars like the Kia Picanto.
ForFour
SMART’s slightly larger ForFour lets the side down a bit when it comes to reliability, achieving a mediocre 148.00 Reliability Index score. The same survey has the average repair cost at £364.62, which is quite high for a small car. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the ForFour was only in production for two years.
